The reigning Premier League champions got off to a flyer with an emphatic win over a stubborn Swansea side in the south of wales. David Moyes will be glad to get off on the right foot as a Welbeck and Van Persie double claimed a victory for the visitors to begin the defense of their title crown. The side utilized a 4-2-3-1 formation adapted from last weeks triumph over Wigan and featured Carrick and Cleverley as holding midfielders with Van Persie as lone striker. Want-away striker Wayne Rooney started the match from the bench.
The match started with the host side taking the initiative and it was Swansea who thought they had taken the lead when Michu toe poked a shot into the back of the net after 19 minutes. Thankfully for the champions he had been flagged offside prior to the play. Despite the firm dominion by Swansea, the reds turned the match on its head in under two minutes. First United scored against the run of play at the 34th minute after a Giggs long ball reached Van Persie who set himself up for a half volley past Vorm, then it was Welbeck who doubled the lead via a tap in from Valencia's cross. The home side went into the half with the stuffing knocked out of them.
Halftime saw the introduction of Swansea new boy Wilfried Bony in attempts to get back into the match. The resurgent side mustered a couple of meaningful chances that David De Gea dealt with. Shortly after the hour mark Wayne Rooney was introduced, replacing evergreen Ryan Giggs. It was Rooney who set up Van Persie for his second goal after his dummy run allowed Van Persie space to rifle a shot into the upper ninety with his thunderous left foot. The hosts reduced the deficit after a defensive mix up gifted Wilfried Bony a debut goal. Welbeck added a fourth at the death with a clever dipping shot to the left side of the goal.
The Dutchman continued this season where he left off with a brilliant display that reassured any doubters that he is still United's main man. Two well taken goals reflect his importance to the side in the attacking department.
