An RVP double downed a woeful Wigan who struggled to create chances in the traditional season curtain raiser. David Moyes claimed his first silverware as Manchester United manager in a comfortable victory over the relegated FA cup champions. The squad featured an experienced group with the added factor of Wilfried Zaha. The one point of concern to the boss will be Rafael who had to limp off with a hamstring injury.
The match began with United having the lions share of the possession and the first chance quickly fell to Robin Van Persie who did not fail to capitulate. After he was picked out by Evra's cross an inch perfect header was enough to beat the goalkeeper and give united a one goal advantage. At the 15 minute mark rafael had to limp off with a hamstring injury and will hopefully be back for the season opener against Swansea. Recent recruit James Mcclean fashioned himself with a half chance after he dragged a shot-cross wide after Chris Smalling made a mess of a long ball. United continued to dominate the half without creating to many clear cut chances. Wigan improved near the end of the half but failed to produce much danger.
United continued the second half at a similar pace and kept the ball around while creating chances wide. At the 59 minute mark Van Persie doubled his tally with a low and hard shot that deflected off the foot of defender James Perch to give the reds a two goal advantage. A number of second half substitutions followed and Moyes boys hung on to finish the first competitive match of the season on the right foot.
The Dutchman proved his class as United's talismanic striker with a textbook double to open his account for the season. Moyes will be glad that Van Persie is finding the back of the net amidst the uncertainty of the Wayne Rooney transfer saga.
